National Cup - round 2

A bright sunny day welcomed our arrival at near neighbours - Corsairs - for what were perfect conditions for rugby.

After disposing of Newark in a fiercely contested game in the last round, another feisty encounter lay ahead.

With a few out injured and unavailable, it was a different team that took the field but, with 40 lads from which to select and plenty of depth, it was a strong squad with a good mix from the two age groups.

Corsairs got out of the traps slightly quicker but although they had more possession, I felt we had more composure and purpose - and this was the case throughout. Another area where we had the upper hand was in defence, with stout tackling, organisation and good cover.

So, after absorbing the initial pressure we started to put points on the board. A try near the posts was soon followed by a second that was worked from a line out - coast to coast - and a third which was a 3/4 pitch length breakout from our 22.
Half time and 17-0 to us.

Corsairs had kept battling throughout but our defence had a stranglehold on the game, forcing them into handling errors.

That said the next score was vital and it came quickly in the second half making it 22-0 and effectively putting the game beyond them.
A subsequent penalty and a try near the end wrapped it up at 30-0.

So, we move onto the next round in November which, if we are away again, will involve travelling further afield as we are into the last 32 nationally.

The most pleasing aspect of the performance was that we maintained a clean sheet (a rare thing in 80minutes of rugby at this level) and that we suffered no further injuries.

With players returning from injury and others being available, choosing the team for the next round will be a difficult problem to solve.

Meanwhile, we have a number of games before that for everyone to lay down a marker and make it hard to ignore their claims for selection.

Thanks for your support.
